Volunteer: Table Talker Team

Do you enjoy talking? Do you enjoy tables?  If one of the answers to those questions is yes... and especially if it's the talking on..then this opportunity is for you!!  Scroll all the way down for the event dates/times link!!

Pretty often Mercy Mall is asked to set up a table in the lobby of a church, business, or at a community fair but is hard to fit into our calendar.  That's where this team, Table Talkers, comes in!  We will train you on the "language" of Mercy Mall and provide you with the materials to set up a table with a covering, flyers, sign ups and info to hand out!

Here are the TOP 5 MUST'S FOR A VOLUNTEER that helps in this area:

BE FRIENDLY BE EDUCATED ABOUT MERCY MALL (even just a little) BE OKAY WITH NOT KNOWING STUFF BE WILLING TO MAKE NEW CONNECTIONS BE APPROACHABLE You may be 1 or 2 of those things but all of them are really helpful to create a space/table that encourages people to come over and chat with you!  SMILING and encouraging people to come and learn. STANDING makes you look ready to meet new people. SHARING flyers speaks better than knowing all the answers.  Just saying simply" I'm not really sure about that but we would love to chat about that more, here is a flyer and an email to reach out to our office and they can help you!" It's an answer instead of guessing at an answer.

We will post opportunities on the calendar for upcoming table events. But we will need to chat and meet you prior to this to go over where items are in the building and to connect you with the place you'll be going!

This is a unique opportunity but would be so much fun for the social, outgoing, and community minded individuals!  Can be spouses doing this together, you can sign up as a team, whatever works!!

link to the opportunities to help!!!!  Events

we will update this doc often with dates/times for you to help be a Table Talker!

Here is the link to our GROUPME chat!! This is how you'll sign up!!! Group Chat

Volunteer: On the Move TRUCK Crew

Our program On the Move helps to address the biggest obstacle with meeting the needs of our clients-transportation. Our box truck provides opportunities to host pre-pack and drive-through pick up events in any area. These host sites can be where clients are concentrated in and around Richmond or in under-served areas around the region. We are open to partnering with local school districts or community initiatives in response to a disaster, etc.

So this is a great way for YOU to join our CREW of truck drivers of our box truck.  Her name is ANNIE!  Treat her right because she is named after someone very dear to us at Mercy Mall who battled lupus and cancer and passed away in 2015.  We know Annie would love to know her name lives on through serving the clients she loved and prayed for in this way!  She would do anything for someone who needed it and this truck will be the VEHICLE (see what we did there) that brings HOPE to those who need it most.

All that is required to join this team of Truck Crew is to have a valid VA driver's license and not be a maniac on the road.  We add you to our insurance and you drive.  You do not need a CDL to drive Annie.

Some of the opportunities to drive:

Weekly pickup of goods from 4 local Walmart Stores As needed pick up of goods from Walmart Distribution Center #6023 Host a Drive events at businesses, neighborhoods or churches in the area Distribution events

We will put all the opportunities available on the site here but from time to time you will be contacted to help as a new opportunity arises.

THANK YOU and 10/4 Good Buddy!

Volunteer: Cases of Hope Packer

We partner with local correctional facilities and programs to provide a fresh start to those entering back into society. Our Cases of Hope program focuses on packing the most needed items as well as providing things that would uplift, encourage, personalize, and entertain on their ride to their next destination. We may never get to meet these individuals, but we are confident that they will feel loved and valued upon opening their “Case of Hope”.

Each released inmate will receive a suitcase with a carry on that includes tops, bottoms, shoes, underclothing, and outerwear in the style they have indicated on the order request. We capture age, gender, race, height, weight, bra and underwear sizes, how they will leave the facility (bus or car), their destination, and the release date.

Our team is trained to picture the individual and choose clothing that will make them feel valued and confident as they begin their new life. In addition, the case will include needed toiletries, a Bible with a topical verse reference, an inspirational adult coloring book/colored pencils, journal, a devotional, and a handwritten note of encouragement.

As a volunteer in this area you will help as needed to pack Cases of Hope.  Sometimes we have "Pack Nights" where you can come and help pack over 10 suitcases at a time.  This is a FUN group activity where you know you are really helping!

We all make mistakes and fall short of God’s standards. We see jail and/or prison as a place for much opportunity; a place for God to help someone hit the “reset” button… and it can become a place to heal, transform, and prepare. We want to continue the work God is already doing in these individuals and communicate that we are cheering them on in their new lives and they are loved and valued!

Philippians 1:6 “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Christ Jesus.”

Help our clients get squeaky clean.....well, their clothes anyways!  We have an opportunity for you or a group to make laundry soap at home, school or church!   Using a tried and true recipe and recycled plastic containers you can help supply a need for individuals and families all around Metro Richmond area!   Here is one online RECIPE for a dry and a liquid version.   Please add a taped or laminated label to each laundry bottle in English and Spanish that says: Homemade Laundry Detergent Do not consume this product.  Use for laundry purposes only. NOTE: Please provide the recommended usage amount with each bottle! Here are links to a label template (both English and Spanish): http://mercymallva.galaxydigital.com/content/mercymallva.galaxydigital.com/filemgr/Englishdetergentlabels.jpg http://mercymallva.galaxydigital.com/content/mercymallva.galaxydigital.com/filemgr/Spanishdetergentlabels.jpg We also have a PDF copy that you can request by emailing us. We suggest an Avery label of some kind (such as Avery Waterproof 15513 labels).

Mercy Mall serves approximately 50-60 clients a week, so every little bit helps.

You can pick up empty bottles from us if you need to...but here's a great tip:

ASK YOUR NEIGHBORS for clean juice containers!  Recycling is a great thing to do anyways but this makes it even better! THE CONTAINER MUST BE CLEAN FROM ANY PREVIOUS LIQUID OR MATERIALS!!!

Sign up to serve in this SOAPY way! Just let us know when your soap is ready for a drop off!  Or you can bring to us Monday-Thursday between 10-2. Drop off at the client side of the building. You can text us at 804-728-2928 when you're ready!

Volunteer: Host a Drive Coordinator

Host a Drive Coordinator Role is an important part of building a community partnership between individuals, churches, organizations and businesses to meet the needs of the clients of Mercy Mall.

In this role, a volunteer will manage the scheduling of drives, communicate with individuals and groups that wish to host a drive and build relationships with new and prospective community partners.  THIS IS A BIG DEAL!

History Moment: We created Host a Drive after the Covid-19 pandemic closed down our donations center.  We had to create a new way to receive donations.  So we put our thinking caps on and our praying hands together and BOOM, BANG, BOP..... we figured it out!  We'll just ask people we know to ask their friends, neighbors and families to donate stuff to them and then they can bring it over when done collecting.  Host a Drive was born!!

As the volunteer coordinator of Drives...you will spend your time on spreadsheets, emails, and working alongside other Team members to continue to receive goods, to build connections and grow our reach in the community!  This role doesn't require the coordinator to physically receive each drive...but to handle the responsibility of organizing them! You will also work to organize our On the Move box truck donation drives alongside our Dispatcher and On-site volunteer for those events!  So many fun possibilities in this role!

Volunteer: Emergency Food Bags

Help others by packing Food Bags! Even though we don't offer food at Mercy Mall we do like to keep a few emergency food items on hand when someone needs it.  That's where YOU come in!  Gather a few friends, your church group, youth organization or if you need some community service hours and assemble a few emergency food bags!

We meet about 50 individuals and families each week and maybe 5 a week could use a snack or something to help tide them over before a meal.  Or maybe this will help them make it a few moments until they feel better.

Simple things are best-here's a few things to include in your bag:

Tuna packet (no can) Packs of crackers Granola bars Small water bottle or Juice box Fruit leather Raisins Napkin/hand wipe Candy/Mints other individually wrapped snacks

Put all that into a gallon size plastic storage bag!

Wanna take it up a notch?

Add a sweet note of encouragement to each bag you make! This is a great way to just say something simple like:

YOU ARE LOVED!

Volunteer: Curbside Crew-RUNNER

If you don’t like to have moss growing under your feet this is your job!  After personal shoppers have packed orders for curbside pick up you arrive to "RUN" those items out!

The Gist: In the afternoon clients and/or case managers arrive to pick up their requested items.  You “run” them to their vehicles. This job is fun, fast and flexible.  Requires a strong back, and ability to transfer heavy objects into vehicles.  For example: microwaves, baby equipment, bikes and more.  Sometimes the runner packs portions of client shopping orders for the next day and may be called to help in the lobby.

Come by 11:30 or 11:45 for group prayer and information that you may need!  It's a fun, fast and fabulous way to VOLUNTEER!

Calling the Hostess with the Mostess.

The front lobby at Mercy Mall is a place for the person who can welcome any guest with a smile, a kind word and a gentle tone.   You will help clients pick out treasures from our GOOD360 products, make them a cup of coffee and offer a warm hug and smile!  But the main reason you are in the lobby will be to offer prayer with the person you help.

Imagine greeting a mom who is facing homelessness or has fled an abusive partner and has started all over Imagine giving a hug and wiping a tear from the face of someone who is dealing with a recent loss of a loved one and just needs to hear something hopeful from God's Word Imagine getting to share the Gospel and welcoming a new brother or sister in Christ

THAT is what the Front Lobby is all about!  Sharing the Good News, the Good Word, and communicating this:

You are So Loved, You are on Purpose, and You are not Alone!

We are looking for seasoned/sensitive Christians who can pray out loud and can encourage someone experiences hardship. You are the FACE of Mercy Mall to the people we serve so SMILES, KINDNESS, COMPASSION and SENSITIVITY are key!

This area serves Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 11:30-2!

Do you feel called or led to serve here? Apply TODAY!

Volunteer: Housewares Packer Extraordinaire

Do you know what the following things are:

Fork Coffee maker Pillow Frying pan

Then you are QUALIFIED! You will help pack Houseware orders for a curbside pickup appointment.  Each month we pack at least 100 Housewares orders for individuals and families. They may have experienced:

Fire Sudden Rehousing or eviction Bed bug infestation Theft Fleeing from Domestic Violence  Other crisis

There are many reasons why someone would need sheets, pots/pans, utensils, bath items, and appliances. They may moved into new housing (or have a move-in date within the week) and do not have the necessary items to live and cook in the home. Maybe they have a stable home address but don't have the resources to purchase linens or essential kiitchen items to complete their home. Perhaps they are in a crisis stabilization program that houses them in a hotel for 3-7 days. There are also many individuals and families that live in extended stay hotels for months even years.  Put yourself there and consider what would make YOUR life easier as you pray and hope to acquire your own home!

You may hope for washcloths and towels for your family of 6 so you don't have to share.

You may hope for a coffee maker because.... COFFEE!

You may hope for a sleeping bag because you are sleeping outside and the blanket you have isn't enough.

You may have dreamed of a matching dish set and canisters to make your home YOUR HOME!!

The team that serves in this department at Mercy Mall experience GREAT JOY as they organize donations of housewares, pack orders for hopeful people, and pray for the people who will unwrap these packed gifts!  JOIN by applying TODAY!

Volunteer: Delivery Crew

This is a GREAT family opportunity....all it takes is a VEHICLE and availability. Every week we serve about 50 individuals or families with pre-packed pick up but not all have transportation to pick up...that's where YOU come in.

When you serve in this way we contact you by text with an opportunity to deliver.  You come to Mercy Mall and access the building  before, during or after business hours to pick up the order.  We send the name, address and phone number for the client you are delivering to.  We try to match you with an area or person that would be a good fit.

All we need to know from you:

What type of vehicle do you drive? What areas will you NOT deliver to? Who will go with you? if applicable

Apply to join our growing Delivery Team Today!

Volunteer: Receiving Team

Since Mercy Mall is a place that gives out clothing, baby gear, household items, cleaning products, hygiene and more...it must come from somewhere!! You are right!

Our WONDERFUL Receiving Team works together to manage the process of receiving donations, goods and more to getting it out on the floor so our Personal Shopper teams can pack it up.

The Receiving Team works with every department facilitating a team approach in order to efficiently meet the needs of our clients.

While there are specific jobs to be accomplished here, the overall mission is best achieved by remaining flexible, being willing to pitch in where needed.

There are several ways that items arrive at Mercy Mall here are a few:

Individual Donations Through our Host a Drive opportunity AMAZON/WALMART orders Consignment store partnerships Good 360 Walmart Distribution Center & Volunteers

You will be asked to help in the following ways:

Physically receiving Sorting items based on our guidelines (don't worry-we'll help you) Stocking the departments  Merchandising (fancy word for making things look nice) Inventory checks

It does take time to learn how to sort through the different items we receive at Mercy Mall but we keep this idea in mind:

Is it something you would wear, use, sleep on? Even more importantly, is it something we know our clientele would use?  Remember that our clients are real people made in the image of God. We want to communicate that God sees them, loves them, and values them. With that in mind we want to give the best that we have to give!

Volunteering in this area is a great place to make friends, be a part of a TEAM that see Miracles happen everyday!  There are many days when a donor drops off an item that is NEEDED the SAME DAY!  That is a very cool thing to witness.  JOIN US!

Volunteer: Host a Drive

Welcome to be an Off-Site Volunteer!  Thank you for your interest in hosting a drive! This remote volunteering initiative is a big part of how we currently provide for our individuals and families overcoming the obstacles to life and home stability.

You may have visited this area before requesting to Host a Drive HERE: Host a Drive Request Form but this area will help you keep track of how many hours you spent collecting and organizing. You may wonder why this is important.  Here are a few reasons to track your time:

You have a need to gather hours for community service or volunteer requirements for school You earn donated funds for each hour you serve It helps Mercy Mall track the time spent on off-site volunteer time You will be able to see how much impact you make in your community

The Host a Drive coordinator will reach out to you regarding your request to Host a Drive. A drive is typically a 2 week commitment, but we will provide you the flyers and information you will need for a successful drive.
