Opportunities From: Mercy Mall of Virginia

Volunteer: McKinney Vento Summer Event

Mercy Mall will be participating in McKinney-Vento’s Summer BBQ Events again this year!

These events provide essential resources, connect students and families with community partners, and help ensure students are prepared to start school on Day 1.

This year, the events will look a little different as they will be hosted on football fields. They will be hosted at three locations in and around Henrico, with vendor tables on one side of the field and fun games for students and families on the other. Mercy Mall has been asked to run the games, and it is going to be so much fun!

We will need around 20 volunteers each day to help with:

• Mercy Mall information table
• Game stations
• Prize tables
• Set-up and break-down
• Tent and game set-up

There are three Thursday event dates:

Thursday, July 16, 2026 | 10 AM–12 PM
Hermitage High School – Football Stadium
8301 Hungary Spring Rd, Henrico, VA 23228

Thursday, July 23, 2026 | 10 AM–12 PM
Henrico High School – Football Stadium
302 Azalea Ave, Richmond, VA 23227

Thursday, July 30, 2026 | 10 AM–12 PM
Highland Springs High School – Student Parking Lot
200 S Airport Dr, Highland Springs, VA 23075

Please note: You will need to sign up separately for each date you would like to serve. Each date will have different shift options for set-up, event support, and break-down.

This is a great opportunity for people of all ages! If you have kids or grandkids who need community service hours, this could be a fun way for them to serve.

If you have any questions, please ask Kristin.

Thank you!

Volunteer: Table Talker Team

Do you enjoy talking? Do you enjoy tables?  If one of the answers to those questions is yes... and especially if it's the talking on..then this opportunity is for you!!  Scroll all the way down for the event dates/times link!!

Pretty often Mercy Mall is asked to set up a table in the lobby of a church, business, or at a community fair but is hard to fit into our calendar.  That's where this team, Table Talkers, comes in!  We will train you on the "language" of Mercy Mall and provide you with the materials to set up a table with a covering, flyers, sign ups and info to hand out!

Here are the TOP 5 MUST'S FOR A VOLUNTEER that helps in this area:

BE FRIENDLY BE EDUCATED ABOUT MERCY MALL (even just a little) BE OKAY WITH NOT KNOWING STUFF BE WILLING TO MAKE NEW CONNECTIONS BE APPROACHABLE You may be 1 or 2 of those things but all of them are really helpful to create a space/table that encourages people to come over and chat with you!  SMILING and encouraging people to come and learn. STANDING makes you look ready to meet new people. SHARING flyers speaks better than knowing all the answers.  Just saying simply" I'm not really sure about that but we would love to chat about that more, here is a flyer and an email to reach out to our office and they can help you!" It's an answer instead of guessing at an answer.

We will post opportunities on the calendar for upcoming table events. But we will need to chat and meet you prior to this to go over where items are in the building and to connect you with the place you'll be going!

This is a unique opportunity but would be so much fun for the social, outgoing, and community minded individuals!  Can be spouses doing this together, you can sign up as a team, whatever works!!

we will update this doc often with dates/times for you to help be a Table Talker!

Volunteer: Make Soap

Help our clients get squeaky clean.....well, their clothes anyways!  We have an opportunity for you or a group to make laundry soap at home, school or church!   Using a tried and true recipe and recycled plastic containers you can help supply a need for individuals and families all around Metro Richmond area!   Here is one online RECIPE for a dry and a liquid version.   Please add a taped or laminated label to each laundry bottle in English and Spanish that says: Homemade Laundry Detergent Do not consume this product.  Use for laundry purposes only. NOTE: Please provide the recommended usage amount with each bottle! Here are links to a label template (both English and Spanish): http://mercymallva.galaxydigital.com/content/mercymallva.galaxydigital.com/filemgr/Englishdetergentlabels.jpg http://mercymallva.galaxydigital.com/content/mercymallva.galaxydigital.com/filemgr/Spanishdetergentlabels.jpg We also have a PDF copy that you can request by emailing us. We suggest an Avery label of some kind (such as Avery Waterproof 15513 labels).

Mercy Mall serves approximately 50-60 clients a week, so every little bit helps.

You can pick up empty bottles from us if you need to...but here's a great tip:

ASK YOUR NEIGHBORS for clean juice containers!  Recycling is a great thing to do anyways but this makes it even better! THE CONTAINER MUST BE CLEAN FROM ANY PREVIOUS LIQUID OR MATERIALS!!!

Sign up to serve in this SOAPY way! Just let us know when your soap is ready for a drop off!  Or you can bring to us Monday-Thursday between 10-2. Drop off at the client side of the building. You can text us at 804-728-2928 when you're ready!

Volunteer: Swish and Swipe SHOO's

We have a great partnership with a local non-profit called SHOOD.  If you don't know who they are...well get ready to learn something new today!  Shood is a non-profit that collects men’s and women’s gently used running shoes, reconditions and distributes them to those who are homeless or living in poverty in Richmond, Virginia.  Here is Their Website! We have a volunteer that drops off shoes from their facility every week or so...that's where YOU come in! We are looking for helpers to do one of the following: Serve at Mercy Mall as needed to clean, sort and label the shoes Pick up bags of shoes and do that part at home or as a group and then bring them back

If you choose take them home here's what you need to know:

You can take as many bags as you think you can handle (up to 4-5)  Use our plastic bins to sort them into after you've cleaned them by size/gender We have some cleaning materials here if you need them We do not keep shoes that aren't in GREAT shape (we'll show you what we mean)

This is a great option for people that aren't available during the day to volunteer, groups that want to help off-site, other people that have limited ability or mobility issues that working from home is better.

We are BLESSED to have such wonderful shoes coming to our clients...that's why we want your help...the faster you SWISH AND SWIPE...the faster they get on the feet of the ones who need them

Volunteer: Emergency Food Bags

Help others by packing Food Bags! Even though we don't offer food at Mercy Mall we do like to keep a few emergency food items on hand when someone needs it.  That's where YOU come in!  Gather a few friends, your church group, youth organization or if you need some community service hours and assemble a few emergency food bags!

We meet about 50 individuals and families each week and maybe 5 a week could use a snack or something to help tide them over before a meal.  Or maybe this will help them make it a few moments until they feel better.

Simple things are best-here's a few things to include in your bag:

Tuna packet (no can) Packs of crackers Granola bars Small water bottle or Juice box Fruit leather Raisins Napkin/hand wipe Candy/Mints other individually wrapped snacks

Put all that into a gallon size plastic storage bag!

Wanna take it up a notch?

Add a sweet note of encouragement to each bag you make! This is a great way to just say something simple like:

YOU ARE LOVED!
